Little Statistics
Got a bad news this morning, another staff in the lab decided to leave, the 2nd one in 2 weeks. What the hell is this place???
I really could not believe this cause I used to think that anyone could leave, but him. He is the right hand of some one I call "ba chu" and is the lung of the center. He has stayed here for almost 15 years, since his graduation from the Ecole Polytechnique in France. He is ( actualy used to be) in charge of everything in the lab, info system, equipement and facility management... and is the only one who knows about (the existence of ) all the equipments we have. He edits all the monthly/quarterly reports/proposals coming out from the center (by grabbing pieces of texts from the weekly/monthly reports of everyone of us and putting them together- that's the way we get funded, lol). He is the closest person to the Prof in this lab, spy and let her know about anything happens. Without him, our research will still go on but things will turn topsy-turvy. SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSS. But good for him.
His leaving lets me think about some statistics:
In 2 years that I have been being here, 12 people have unexpectedly left the center: 3 students and 9 postdocs or "permenant" staffs. Sadly that I had really good relation with 6 of them; they helped and motivated me a lot since my earlier days. Have to say that all people felt happy when they left and we all think good for them.
People come and leave, true, but in the same amount of time, we got only 5 new students ( 4 in my year and 1 last year) 1 visitting scholar for a period of 2 years. The number of PhD graduating from the center is only 5 in 2 years, that means 37.5% of student leaves the center unsuccessfully.
Is the center dying?? I am not sure.
In what posture will I be leaving this center? Same answer...
